What is quicksand?
Quicksand is a mixture of light soil, clay or sand and water.
Water lets the grains of the soil or sand absorb it and
therefore separates and lifts them. That causes the grains
to tumble over one another, and makes it impossible to
support weighty objects. The quicksand will remain stable if
it is left alone. However, when you fall into it,all the sand
sinks to the bottom and the water flows to the top.So it is
not possible to drown in it as in the end the furthest you can go
is on the layer of sand at the bottom. You may get stuck in it
but you can never drown in it.
How do we get out of it if we happen to fall into it?
The best way to stay 'afloat'in it is to move very slowly
when in it,allowing it time to flow around your body and
keep you 'afloat'.Making small circles with your limbs will mix
up the water and sand again, hence making it less dense. Then it will be easier for someone to pull you out.
How does the water exactly get into the sand in the first place?
